About Sandy Evans
Sandy Evans is an accomplished leader in our community. She has worked tirelessly on school, health and transportation issues:
- FCPS School Health Advisory Committee member, past chair
- Northern Virginia Healthy Kids Coalition, Steering Committee member
- Fairfax Education Coalition, founding member (2009)
- Start Later for Excellence in Education Proposal (SLEEP), Co-Founder
- FAIRGRADE Leadership Team advisor and active volunteer
- Fairfax County Council of PTAs, legislation committee chair
- School Board Transportation Task Force member (2007-08)
- PTA president, Sleepy Hollow Elementary School (2000-2001)
- Girl Scout leader (1997-2004)
- Future Problem Solving coach (2000-2009, including Virginia State Champions 2007)
- FCPS Health and PE Advisory Committee (2005-6)
- Superintendent’s Parent Advisory Council (1999-2000)
- Active PTA volunteer, room parent, classroom volunteer
- Fairfax County Association for the Gifted member, 1996 to present
- Swim team volunteer (Sleepy Hollow Bath & Racquet and TJ)
Sandy was a professional journalist for two decades, most of that time at The Washington Post. For several years, she free-lanced as a writer while becoming more involved in community activities, particularly our public schools.
Sandy is married to Steve Hoffman, an attorney. She has two daughters, Leah, a graduate student at Yale University and Zoë, who attended Fairfax County public schools K-12 and now a first-year student at the University of Virginia.
